WASHINGTON - Under withering attack from conservatives, President Bush ended his push to put loyalist Harriet Miers on the Supreme Court Thursday and promised a quick replacement. Democrats accused him of bowing to the "radical right wing of the Republican Party."
The White House said Miers had withdrawn her name because of a bipartisan effort in Congress to gain access to internal documents related to her role as counsel to the president. But politics played a larger role: Bush's conservative backers had doubts about her ideological purity, and Democrats had little incentive to help the nominee or the embattled GOP president.
This will be the story dejour until the indictments get handed out for the CIA leak probe which is likely today or tommorrow. In the meantime, wow.
Any bets, he nominates Alberto Gonzalez now?

Depending on who if anyone is indicted I would doubt that a nomination pull would gain any traction. If Card, Libby or Rove get indicted that would be the only story.
see, i'm confused about this, because i thought she was a staunch bush supporter, and anti abortion and all that, so why does the radical religious right have such a problem with her?
The Religious Right doesn't like her because she doesn't have a public record to assuage their fears. She has given money to the Democrats in the past, and though she might be staunchly Bush she just doesn't have any judicial history. She's too much of an unknown for them and they (the religious right) don't like that.
Does anyone else think that it's odd that Bush's own supporters took her down and not the Dems? His second term is really kind of going to shit. Almost a year into it and he can't get to his agenda because he's constantly putting out fires.
Adam said: If I were a conspiracy nut, I'd wonder if this was designed to take some of the thunder out of the impending indictments. But I'm not, so I'll just tell myself that the suspicious timing is just a coincidence.
I look at it this way: no matter what, some amount of shit is going to hit the fan on Friday. It could be a little, or it could be a lot. Either way, this administration wants to put all of its garbage behind it, so they figure "let's get rid of Meirs, let's deal with the indictments, and let's deal with this third hurricane situation in Florida NOW so that we can put them ALL behind us ASAP and get back on task with out agenda."
No conspiracy here, just an attempt to clean the slate quickly so that this administration can attempt to move on.
I wish them luck because they're going to need it.
