Of course, I am not sure which conservatives these are. They look more like the religious type.
I will leave you to read the article on Forbes.com. Essentially, Senator McCain is starting early in Iowa(It is only 2006 right?). Part of his strategy involves mending fences with religious conservatives. These groups appear to be upset with the Senator because he doesn't sling enough poo at the Democrats, doesn't want to squash the rights of the minority party, wants to have more limits on campaign funding and is actually willing to work side by side with *GASP* Senator Ted Kennedy.
Maybe the Senator is actually trying to do his job. You know create legislation that is good for the whole country? Not just the ones that elected him. With regard to not abolishing the filibuster for judicial nominees, perhaps, the Senator et al realized that they might not always be the majority party...
Stay tuned.

I think it's a smart move for McCain. I like the guy because he's in the middle. I don't know all his positions, but he seems to be about compromise and not "my way or you burn in hell!". But he learned the hard way that you have to play to certain politics if you claim to belong to a certain party. So if he uses the religious nuts to get the nomination and then the presidency, hopefully he won't forget his original goals and beliefs and do the country some effin' good.
Don't the religioso-conservatives believe in Jesus and a sheep or something? And aren't people just a big flock of 2 legged sheep? So, with that, they should follow him blindly and then forgive him if he doesn't give what he promised (what politician ever does?) to THEM like they say that Jesus guy is always talking about.
To the first part of your reply, I to hope that he won't forget his original goals. However, the religious right is about as good to be in bed with as the mafia. Sooner or later the bill comes due or their is hell to pay.
Should he ignore them? No. Should he promise them the keys to the castle? Uh, no.
should he shoot them? sure...so many other options....
